We meet Catherine, a young cottier woman from the West of Ireland whose life will be transformed by the arrival of the potato blight. Catherine is played by Caitriona Ennis.

We meet Dr. Daniel Donovan from Skibbereen in Co Cork who describes in a letter written to a newspaper, the sad details of his practice among a famine–stricken people. Dr. Donovan is played by Ray Scannell.
